bangalore: the centre will soon provide sniper towers at all major airports, give advance training to central industrial security force (cisf), install closed-circuit televisions (cctvs) and surveillance systems inside airports and limit the issuance of special passes to those who frequent airports regularly. in an interview to the times of india here on monday, union civil aviation minister syed shahnawaz hussain said these are part of the beefed up security measures taken in the country following the terrorists attack on the us.
hussain said he would lead a campaign explaining the need for tighter security at the airports. "we will tell the people to cooperate with us so that we can protect their lives. if you don't want another wtc-type incident here bear with us. there will be no compromise on security," he stated. he is preparing a detailed presentation to be shown to prime minister vajpayee and his cabinet colleagues on modernising the security at airports. hussain said he has mooted the idea of making the airspace above historical monuments as no-fly-zones and a final decision on the same will be taken at a meeting with home minister advani and the cabinet committee of security soon. "now the planes are used as missiles. and even if an aircraft is hijacked we are now more concerned where it would land." he observed. he said the cisf would be told to function in a customer-friendly manner while dealing with the passengers. as part of this image-building exercise, the national institute of fashion technology (nift) has asked to design trendy designer outfits for the cisf men.
